Alice Levine for Goodnow Library Trustee

I am excited to announce my candidacy for Trustee of the Goodnow Library. The Goodnow Library has been the intellectual soul of our community, enriching our lives and helping to make Sudbury a better place for all ages. I want to apply a lifetime of community service experiences for the betterment of this cherished community institution.

My family and I have loved Sudbury as a town so much that we moved here twice, and we have called Sudbury our home for nearly forty years. I hope to earn your support as I continue on my journey to support this remarkable town, and our truly unique library.

My long history of community involvement began with the Haynes School PTA, its craft center, and as a Girl Scout leader.  As a member of Greenwood Swim and Tennis Club, I was Club Secretary for 10 years, including the time when the pool and clubhouse were rebuilt.

When we were transferred back from California in 1990, my daughter, who had been very involved in her Saratoga, California High School Speech and Debate team, wanted to recreate that experience at LS.  So, my daughter and I founded the L.S. Speech and Debate Team with an initial group of four students.  We were able to recruit a speech coach and a speech professor from Suffolk University to help us out.  Today, the L.S. Speech and Debate Team is a mainstream activity enjoyed by many.

I also brought with me from California the idea of an overnight graduation party for the Senior Class that was popular in the Bay Area of California.  Through the L.S. PTA, we formed a committee to research and organize the first Senior Safe Night and named it Jamaica Jammin’.  Jamaica Jammin’ continues to this day.  While my children were students at L.S., I was also a member of the L.S. Scholarship Committee, involved with Friends of Music, and watched countless hours of swim meets and softball games.

As a member of The First Parish, I co-chaired the First Parish Harvest Craft Fair for 10 years, enhancing the quality of venders and growing it to a juried show.  The Craft Fair became a major town event and part of a larger festival in the town center that involved the Art Association and the Hosmer House.  When the First Parish undertook a major renovation of the sanctuary and the religious education building, I was a member of the Building Committee that worked with the architect and the contractors to complete the project.

As a member of the Thursday Garden Club, I have been President for two terms and held many other offices.  I sold and planted countless daffodils and cleaned and spruced up many of the gardens we maintain for the town.  Last winter, the club jumped on my idea of A Fairy Garden Walk.  I served on the committee and created my own fairy house for the walk. The event sold out in advance, brought out the very best in members’ creativity, and was a wonderful outdoor weekend event for the town.

The importance of the Goodnow Library to me is demonstrated by a more than 20-year involvement with the Friends of the Goodnow Library.  During my tenure as President, we enhanced community awareness of the Friends’ work, created a structured budgeting process, and standardized our systems for running book sales, events and programs.  We encouraged the community to not only join us, but to participate in library activities and to volunteer.  If elected, I will resign my position on the Executive Board to avoid any hint of conflict of interest.

If I have learned anything in my decades of service, it’s that volunteering to support this town is its own reward. That sense of community and compassion shines so bright in Sudbury because of the contributions and participation of so many. What I will bring to the Board of Trustees is a proven capability to engage others, to work selflessly to attain consensus, to listen carefully to everyone within an organization and with whom that organization collaborates, and to ultimately focus on realizing the goals of the Goodnow Library.  I will bring responsible leadership skills and will work diligently to ensure that residents receive the highest level of service and a priority focus for all that the library does.

I hope to earn your support in the coming weeks. If I can answer any questions about my experience serving Sudbury, or the future of the Goodnow Library, please reach out to me on my Facebook page: or send me an email at
